Doctoral student ombudsmen
A doctoral student ombudsman is a person who may be appointed at an institute, whose functions and possible methods of operation are described in paragraph 16 of the School Regulations. In particular, the tasks of ombudsman include:
- supporting doctoral students in solving problems related to their doctoral programme and assisting them in the event of violations of the principles of equal treatment or other inappropriate situations
- advice and assistance, in particular indicating possible paths to follow in cases of dispute and assisting in the preparation of applications, complaints or other documents,
- organising mediation, conflict resolution and amicable dispute resolution, in particular between doctoral students and others (e.g. supervisors, institute authorities) and proposing amicable solutions to disputes.
If no doctoral student ombudsman has been appointed at your institute, you may find it helpful to contact, for example, your supervisor, the school coordinator at your institute, the director or deputy director of the institute, or a representative of the doctoral student council (depending on the nature of the problem).
