We present the Code of Ethics (CoE) for our doctoral school. The main part of this CoE is adopted from the code of ethics prepared by the National Representation of PhD Candidates (Krajowa Reprezentacja Doktorantów, KRD). We also adopted a few regulations from the Ethics Statement of the European Astronomical Society (EAS) to improve it. We encourage you to read this CoE and follow it in your academic life.

Chapter I
General Rules / Przepisy Ogólne
§1
- The doctoral student’s duties and the nature of the activities performed by them, determine the scope of ethical standards, which each doctoral student is obliged to follow.
Obowiązki doktoranta oraz charakter wykonywanych przez niego czynności, wyznaczają zakres norm etycznych, do których przestrzegania zobowiązany jest każdy doktorant. - Any conduct exhibited by a doctoral student that results in erosion of the trust of either the academic community or the public in either the doctoral students or their affiliated institutes would be considered a violation of this Code. That kind of behaviour is, in particular, any act that may undermine the trust in the scientific work of doctoral students or academic staff of the Doctoral School and its research institutes, its results, and in the doctoral community. It is the duty of the doctoral student to comply with the ethical standards and principles set out in this Code.
Każde zachowanie doktoranta, które skutkuje nadszarpnięciem zaufania społeczności akademickiej lub społeczeństwa do doktorantów lub instytutów przy których są afiliowani, będzie uznane za naruszenie niniejszego Kodeksu. Takim zachowaniem jest w szczególności każdy czyn, który może podważyć zaufanie do pracy badawczej doktorantów lub pracowników Szkoły Doktorskiej, jej wyników, jak i do społeczności doktoranckiej. Obowiązkiem doktoranta jest przestrzegać norm etycznych i zasad określonych w niniejszym Kodeksie.
§2
In cases not covered by this Code, the doctoral student should obey the internal acts issued by the bodies of the Doctoral School and research institutes with which they are associated and behave in accordance with the customs adopted in the academic community.
W przypadkach nieobjętych niniejszym Kodeksem, doktorant powinien przestrzegać aktów wewnętrznych wydanych przez organy Szkoły Doktorskiej i instytuty badawcze z którymi jest związany oraz zachowywać się zgodnie ze zwyczajami przyjętymi w społeczności akademickiej.
§3
Each doctoral student is obliged to cooperate in following the principles of this Code.
Każdy doktorant obowiązany jest współdziałać w przestrzeganiu zasad tego Kodeksu.
§4
The principles set out in this Code shall apply to the doctoral students both in their didactic classes and research work.
Zasady wyrażone w tym Kodeksie obowiązują doktoranta podczas prowadzonych przez niego zajęć dydaktycznych oraz prac badawczych.
§5
A doctoral student should be characterized by:
- conscientiousness in undertaken activities, in particular in the didactic work and research;
- impartiality in the work, research, and deliberations undertaken, which should be manifested primarily in independence from any influence on the conducted activities;
- responsibility for actions taken, words and opinions expressed, including gestures and behaviour in a public sphere;
- courage in undertaken research and presented conclusions, even if they are contradictory to the practice adopted so far;
- openness to cooperation with participants of the scientific discourse;
- reliability and credibility of the research presented.
Doktorant powinien charakteryzować się:
- sumiennością w podejmowanych działaniach, w szczególności w pracy dydaktycznej i prowadzonych badaniach;
- bezstronnością w podejmowanych pracach, badaniach i rozważaniach, która powinna przejawiać się przede wszystkim w niezależności od jakichkolwiek wpływów na prowadzone działalności;
- odpowiedzialnością za podejmowane działania, wyrażane słowa i opinie, w tym również gesty i zachowania w sferze publicznej;
- odwagą w podejmowanych badaniach i prezentowanych wnioskach, nawet wtedy, gdy stoją w sprzeczności z dotychczas przyjętą praktyką,
- otwartością na współpracę z uczestnikami dyskursu naukowego;
- rzetelnością i wiarygodnością przedstawianych badań.
Chapter II
Conducting Research / Prowadzenie badań
§6
The doctoral student is obliged to scrupulously collect and process research materials and to maintain adequate diligence in their storage in such a way as to prevent their manipulation. At the same time, the doctoral student should conduct data management and data storage in such a manner to facilitate the reusability of digital research materials and the reproducibility of claimed scientific results after publication e.g., in accordance with the FAIR Data Principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable; https://www.go-fair.org/fair-principles/). Each doctoral student will treat all research equipment and all institute property with care. The student will conduct research and analysis in accordance with the established rules of each institute’s information technology (IT) departments to ensure security and management of all electronic forms of data and associated data products and files.
Doktorant zobowiązany jest do skrupulatnego zbierania i przetwarzania materiałów pochodzących z prowadzonych badań oraz do zachowania należytej staranności w ich przechowywaniu, w taki sposób, aby uniemożliwić manipulowanie nimi. Jednocześnie doktorant powinien prowadzić zarządzanie danymi i ich przechowywanie w sposób ułatwiający ponowne wykorzystanie cyfrowych materiałów badawczych oraz odtwarzalność deklarowanych wyników badań naukowych po ich opublikowaniu, np. zgodnie z zasadami FAIR Data Principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable; https://www.go-fair.org/fair-principles/). Każdy doktorant będzie traktował z należytą starannością cały sprzęt badawczy oraz całe mienie instytutu. Doktorant będzie prowadził badania i analizy zgodnie z ustalonymi zasadami działów informatycznych (IT) każdego instytutu, aby zapewnić bezpieczeństwo i zarządzanie wszystkimi elektronicznymi formami danych i związanymi z nimi produktami i plikami danych.
§7
Scientific research should be carried out on the basis of diligence, reliability, credibility, and impartiality.
Badania naukowe powinny być prowadzone z zachowaniem zasad staranności, rzetelności, wiarygodności i bezstronności.
§8
Scientific research should be conducted taking into account the safety rules.
Badania naukowe powinny być prowadzone z uwzględnieniem zasad bezpieczeństwa.
§9
Financial resources allocated to research should be distributed rationally, with common sense, logic, and in accordance with the legal provisions. All doctoral students are expected to comply with the terms and conditions regarding any financial assistance they receive.
Środki finansowe przekazane na badania powinny być rozdysponowywane racjonalnie, z uwzględnieniem wskazań zdrowego rozsądku, logiki oraz zgodnie z przepisami prawa. Od doktorantów oczekuje się przestrzegania zasad i warunków dotyczących wszelkiej pomocy finansowej, którą otrzymują.
§10
Research should be conducted in such a way that it does not infringe on the copyrights of other parties.
Badania powinny być prowadzone w taki sposób, aby nie naruszały praw autorskich innych podmiotów.
§11
The fabrication of research results, falsification, or plagiarism is highly unethical and strongly prohibited.
Fabrykowanie wyników badań, fałszowanie lub plagiat jest wysoce nieetyczne i stanowczo zabronione.
Chapter III
Conducting didactic classes and attitude towards students /
Prowadzenie zajęć dydaktycznych i stosunek do studentów
§12
Within their scientific disciplines, a doctoral student should gain competence and independence in conducting didactic classes. The classes should encourage students to explore the issues that constitute the content of a specific subject.
W ramach swoich dyscyplin naukowych doktorant powinien uzyskać kompetencje i samodzielność w prowadzeniu zajęć dydaktycznych. Zajęcia te powinny zachęcać studentów do zgłębiania zagadnień stanowiących treść określonego przedmiotu.
§13
The doctoral student should maintain an appropriate proportion between the requirements of the subject and their own expectations.
Doktorant powinien zachować odpowiednie proporcje między wymaganiami przedmiotu a własnymi oczekiwaniami.
§14
Classes should be consistent with the content of the subject and the technical conditions. At the same time, the doctoral student should make efforts to teach using a variety of forms and include the latest teaching methods.
Zajęcia dydaktyczne powinne być zgodne z treściami realizowanego przedmiotu i posiadanymi warunkami technicznymi. Jednocześnie doktorant powinien dołożyć starań, aby prowadzić zajęcia z wykorzystaniem różnorodnych form i uwzględniać najnowsze metody nauczania.
§15
- A doctoral student should present decent behaviour, in a way respecting accepted customs. They should refrain from personal comments.
- While assessing another student’s skills and knowledge in the field of the subject, the doctoral student should present reliability and professionalism.
- All professional interactions should be considerate and respectful. This includes interactions with other scientists, post-docs, doctoral students, other group members, administrative, technical, or other support staff, and members of the public.
- Abusive, intimidating, humiliating or demeaning behaviour is not acceptable under any circumstances. Maximum effort should be put forth into creating an inclusive, supportive, and stimulating working environment, where all people feel included, welcomed, and valued.
- Efforts should be made to self-educate and to be aware of any possible unconscious biases and prejudices and of different habits/thresholds for inappropriateness and offensiveness in different cultures.
- Inappropriate, aggressive or offensive behaviour, bullying and harassment by an individual or a group against another individual or group should not be tolerated. Prohibited behaviours include, but are not limited to, harassment based on race, color, national origin, citizenship, religion, ancestry, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation or preference, pregnancy, physical or mental disability, medical condition, marital status, or age, and encompass all forms of physical or verbal harassment. Every effort should be made to stop it immediately and prevent it from reoccurring.
- If a student is the victim of harassment, they should feel free to report the improper behaviour to their supervisors and/or to the Doctoral School Authorities. Anyone who makes a report will be protected from retaliation for making such a report.
- Doktorant powinien zachowywać się kulturalnie, w sposób zgodny z przyjętymi zwyczajami. Powinien powstrzymać się od komentarzy dotyczących osoby studenta, bądź prezentowanych przez niego poglądów.
- Oceniając umiejętności i wiedzę innego studenta w zakresie przedmiotu, doktorant powinien prezentować rzetelność i profesjonalizm.
- Wszystkie zawodowe interakcje powinny być przemyślane i pełne szacunku. Obejmuje to interakcje z innymi naukowcami, stażystami po doktoracie, doktorantami, innymi członkami grupy, personelem administracyjnym, technicznym lub innym personelem pomocniczym oraz członkami społeczeństwa.
- Obraźliwe, zastraszające, upokarzające lub poniżające zachowanie nie jest akceptowane w żadnych okolicznościach. Należy dołożyć wszelkich starań, aby stworzyć włączające, wspierające i stymulujące środowisko pracy, w którym wszyscy ludzie czują się włączeni, mile widziani i doceniani.
- Należy podjąć wysiłki w celu samokształcenia i uświadomienia sobie wszelkich możliwych uprzedzeń i nieświadomych uprzedzeń oraz różnych nawyków/progów niestosowności i obraźliwości w różnych kulturach.
- Nie należy tolerować niewłaściwego, agresywnego lub obraźliwego zachowania, nękania i prześladowania przez osobę lub grupę wobec innej osoby lub grupy. Zakazane zachowania obejmują między innymi nękanie ze względu na rasę, kolor skóry, narodowość, obywatelstwo, religię, pochodzenie, płeć, tożsamość płciową, orientację lub preferencje seksualne, ciążę, niepełnosprawność fizyczną lub umysłową, stan zdrowia, stan cywilny lub wiek i obejmują wszystkie formy nękania fizycznego lub werbalnego. Należy dołożyć wszelkich starań, aby natychmiast je przerwać i zapobiec ich ponownemu wystąpieniu.
- Jeżeli doktorant jest ofiarą niewłaściwego zachowania, powinien bez obaw zgłosić je swojemu promotorowi i/lub władzom Szkoły Doktorskiej. Każdy, kto dokona zgłoszenia będzie chroniony przed odwetem za dokonanie takiego zgłoszenia.
Chapter IV
Attitude towards the Authorities of the Doctoral School and its research institutes and other entities with which the doctoral student is associated /
Stosunek względem władz Szkoły Doktorskiej i instytutów ją tworzących i innych podmiotów, z którymi związany jest doktorant
§16
The doctoral student is obliged to respect the Authorities of the Doctoral School and its research institutes.
Doktorant zobowiązany jest okazywać szacunek władzom Szkoły Doktorskiej i instytutów ją tworzących.
§17
- A doctoral student is obliged to be tactful and restrained towards the Authorities of the Doctoral School and its research institutes, its employees, colleagues, and cooperating entities.
- In case of inappropriate behaviour from the abovementioned people, the doctoral student should react tactfully and inform the head of the institution.
- Doktorant zobowiązany jest zachować takt i powściągliwość wobec władz Szkoły Doktorskiej i instytutów ją tworzących, jej pracowników, koleżanek i kolegów doktorantów i współpracujących podmiotów.
- W przypadku niewłaściwego zachowania wyżej wymienionych osób doktorant powinien zareagować taktownie i poinformować o tym kierownika placówki.
§18
The doctoral student is obliged to comply with the resolutions and ordinances issued in the framework of their Doctoral School and its research institutes.
Doktorant zobowiązany jest stosować się do uchwał i zarządzeń wydawanych w ramach Szkoły Doktorskiej i instytutów ją tworzących.
§19
A doctoral student is obliged to appear at every request of the Authorities of the Doctoral School and their affiliation research institute and in relevant cases immediately justify their absence.
Doktorant obowiązany jest stawić się na każde wezwanie władz Szkoły Doktorskiej i instytutów ją tworzących, a swoje ewentualne niestawiennictwo niezwłocznie usprawiedliwić.
§20
The doctoral student is obliged to properly indicate all the undertaken activities on behalf of his Doctoral School and its research institutes by indicating the logotype or annotation about affiliation. In the case of cooperation with external entities, this obligation stays the same.
Doktorant obowiązany jest do właściwego oznaczenia podejmowanych przez siebie działań z ramienia Szkoły Doktorskiej i instytutów ją tworzących, poprzez wskazanie logotypu lub adnotacji o afiliacji. W przypadku współpracy z podmiotami zewnętrznymi obowiązek ten jest tożsamy.
§21
A doctoral student undertaking activities in cooperation with several units is obliged to include relevant information about this cooperation in the documentation.
Doktorant podejmujący działania we współpracy z kilkoma jednostkami zobowiązany jest umieścić o tym informację w dokumentacji.
Chapter V
Participation in self-government and creating an academic community /
Uczestniczenie w samorządzie oraz tworzenie wspólnoty akademickiej
§22
Each doctoral student is obliged to cooperate within the doctoral students’ self-government.
Każdy doktorant zobowiązany jest do współpracy w ramach samorządu doktorantów.
§23
Any disputes arising between doctoral students or doctoral students and employees of the research institutes of the Doctoral School should be first settled amicably.
Wszelkie spory wynikłe pomiędzy doktorantami lub doktorantami i pracownikami instytutów Szkoły Doktorskiej powinny być w pierwszej kolejności rozstrzygane polubownie.
§24
The doctoral student is obliged to follow the principles of solidarity with other doctoral students, as well as representatives of the academic community.
Doktorant zobowiązany jest do kierowania się zasadami solidarności z innymi doktorantami i przedstawicielami społeczności akademickiej.
§25
In relation to doctoral students and employees of the research institutes of the Doctoral School, a doctoral student should provide help, advice, and opinion.
W stosunku do doktorantów i pracowników instytutów Szkoły Doktorskiej doktorant powinien służyć pomocą, radą i opinią.
§26
- Each doctoral student is strongly encouraged to participate in the organizational life of the Doctoral School and its research institutes, including the actions, lead by the self-government, through its bodies.
- Each doctoral student should consider themselves welcome to participate in, and contribute to, the social life of the doctoral community, and should make other doctoral students feel welcome to participate as well.
- Każdy doktorant jest gorąco zachęcany do uczestnictwa w życiu organizacyjnym Szkoły Doktorskiej i jej instytutów badawczych, w tym w działaniach, prowadzonych przez samorząd, za pośrednictwem jego organów.
- Każdy doktorant powinien uważać się za mile widzianego uczestnika życia społecznego społeczności doktoranckiej i wnosić do niego swój wkład, a także sprawić, by inni doktoranci również czuli się mile widziani.
§27
- The doctoral student will obey all legal acts of the Republic of Poland.
- In the case of conducting research, as well as teaching abroad, or as part of cooperation with entities from foreign countries, the doctoral student undertakes to respect the law in force in that country.
- Doktorant będzie przestrzegał wszystkich aktów prawnych Rzeczypospolitej Polskiej.
- W przypadku prowadzenia badań naukowych, a także zajęć dydaktycznych za granicą lub w ramach współpracy z podmiotami z zagranicy, doktorant zobowiązuje się do przestrzegania prawa obowiązującego w tym państwie.
§28
The doctoral student undertakes to cooperate in the promulgation and dissemination of the principles of this Code.
Doktorant zobowiązuje się współdziałać na rzecz krzewienia i upowszechniania zasad tego Kodeksu.
